Both indoor and outdoor workers can use penguin-inspired techniques to prevent slips and falls
Denver, CO— Jan. 21, 2025 — As much of the nation faces extreme cold, Pinnacol Assurance, Colorado’s leading workers’ compensation carrier, and the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance are teaming up to remind everyone of a unique way to remember how to stay safe on slippery surfaces: walk like a penguin.
"Slips and falls are a leading cause of injury during the winter months," said Monica Cabrera, Safety Learning Specialist at Pinnacol. "By mimicking how penguins walk – short shuffles, angled feet, outstretched arms – we can all stay on our feet and avoid dangerous falls."
How to Walk Like a Penguin:
- P: Point your toes outward and walk flat-footed
- E: Extend your arms for balance, like flippers
- N: No unnecessary distractions like phones; keep items in your pocket or backpack
- G: Grippy shoes are a must
- U: Use neat, short, shuffling steps; go slow and place your center of gravity over each front leg
"Penguins have a natural ability to navigate slippery surfaces," added Cabrera. "We encourage everyone – workers, families, children – to learn this walk and stay safe this winter.”
Pinnacol's data from 2018-2024 shows that slips and falls account for 20% of all worker injuries annually. While some falls result in minor bumps and bruises, others lead to severe muscle injuries, bone breaks, and even head injuries.
Winter weather can increase the risk of falls for both indoor and outdoor workers. Even temperature shifts, as ice melts and refreezes, create hazardous conditions.
The most common occupations affected by slips/falls on ice are drivers, teachers and delivery drivers, and the most common industry is clerical/professional. For all years, the most dangerous date for slip and fall accidents is January 19; however, this date varies slightly each year.
Additional winter safety tips:
- Watch weather forecasts and wear shoes with good traction in snow or ice.
- Don't put your hands in your pockets; wear gloves and keep your hands extended for balance.
- Take extra precautions getting in and out of your car; maintain three points of contact at all times.
- Be cautious with inside surfaces that can become very slippery and accumulate moisture.
