Community relations

We have a policy of serving people.

It's pretty simple. We love our community.

For more than 100 years, our job has been all about protecting the health and safety of people on their jobs. And that sense of caring extends to the communities where we live and work. We donate time, money and support through grants, sponsorships, our employee volunteer and giving programs and the Pinnacol Foundation's scholarship program.

Pinnacol Assurance and the Pinnacol Foundation contributed $1.1 million in scholarship, grant, employee giving, sponsorship and membership funding last year.

We created our scholarship program to ensure that the children of injured workers have the opportunity to pursue their dreams by continuing their education.

Since we started in 2000, we've awarded more than $7.4 million in scholarships to nearly 800 students across Colorado. Scholarships average $4,700 per student per year, and are used on tuition, fees and books at accredited colleges, universities, community colleges and vocational schools.

Our community investments program reflects the work we do as a company

Protecting the health and safety of Colorado employers and their employees, helping injured workers get back to work, and promoting a robust business climate and a prepared workforce statewide. Our grants, sponsorships and membership investments support nonprofits whose efforts align with these pillars.

Rehabilitative health services
Part of our job as a workers’ compensation insurer is making sure that people who have been injured on the job get the care they need to heal from or live with injuries. So an important piece of our community giving is support for organizations that provide rehabilitative care to those who are recovering from physical injuries or living with ongoing disabilities.

Employee safety and health
A key focus of our business is keeping our policyholders’ employees safe and healthy, but we believe the work shouldn’t stop there. So we’ve aligned our community giving with nonprofits that promote similar objectives. We also award safety grants to Colorado nonprofits seeking to proactively address workplace safety hazards for their own employees.

Economic vitality and workforce development
Our commitment to helping our policyholders thrive extends beyond providing workers’ compensation coverage. We’re helping promote a strong business climate for our state as a member of more than 40 chambers of commerce and industry associations. We also support nonprofits that are developing Colorado's talent pipeline in industries and regions facing worker shortages, with the greatest consideration given to organizations that support advanced skill development that are designed to create opportunity for Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) communities as part of our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

General Exclusions
We will not support:
- Organizations that discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or disability with respect to employment, volunteer participation or the provision of services
-Individual K-12 public and private schools
- Religious institutions (except hospitals and hospital foundations)
- Requests that solicit financial support for individuals, political candidates and political campaigns, or entities that are not nonprofit organizations

Additionally, Pinnacol seldom makes community investments in fundraising luncheons, dinners, galas, sporting events (walks, races, golf tournaments or similarly-structured events).

These exclusions may not apply to Pinnacol’s safety grant program.

Our employees are passionate about serving others, both on and off the job.

Through our corporate volunteer program, Pinnacol in Action, each employee is given unlimited hours of paid volunteer time annually to help Colorado nonprofits.

We believe in paying it forward

As part of our annual giving campaign, 83.67% of Pinnacol employees donated to nonprofits, raising $142,389 in two weeks. Pinnacol matched the contributions for a total gift of $277,118.

Our employees are devoted to making a difference, and our giving campaign is entirely employee-led.
