Working with subcontractors is a great way to keep up with demand, gain flexibility, or free up time to focus on the big picture. Many Colorado companies hire independent contractors to help them get the job done, but these relationships come with risks.

Your first step is to determine if your partner is an independent contractor or an employee. Once you know they are a subcontractor, it’s time to confirm they have their own workers’ comp policy.

Learn more about how to determine whether a worker is an independent contractor or an employee in this quick video.

How to check if an independent contractor has workers’ comp insurance

You can verify an independent contractor’s workers’ comp policy in a few clicks. Here's how:

  1. Start at the Colorado Division of Workers' Compensation verification tool site.
  2. Read the terms of use and click "Accept"
  3. Enter the employer name, Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), or address, and click "Search"
  4. Click on the employer's name to see their insurance provider, policy number, and coverage date

If everything checks out for your subcontractor, you can check the worker’ comp box and get to work!
