Average scholarship is $4,700 for the children of injured workers

DENVER, Nov. 11, 2021 – The Pinnacol Foundation scholarship program is now accepting applications for the upcoming school year. Applications are due Feb. 15. The Foundation exists solely to provide scholarships to children whose parents have been injured or killed in work-related accidents in Colorado. Visit Pinnacolfoundation.org to complete the online application, or call 303.361.4775 for more information.

Pinnacol Assurance’s motto is “Work Hard, Care Harder.” They put that motto into action each time the Foundation issues scholarships to children who live with their loved one’s severe, work-related injury or death.  Since its inception in 2000 the Foundation has awarded $6 million to nearly 650 students across Colorado. Funds may be used for four-year, two-year or trade programs at accredited colleges, universities, community colleges and vocational schools in the United States.

“The young people that are awarded the Pinnacol Foundation scholarship are some of the most resilient and inspiring that Colorado has to offer,” said Edie Sonn, chair of the Pinnacol Foundation Board of Directors. “Often they have overcome tremendous challenges, sometimes caring for siblings and contributing to the family budget while also attending college. It’s an honor getting to know them and being a part of their educational journey.”

To be eligible to apply for a Pinnacol Foundation scholarship, a student must be the natural child, adopted child, stepchild or full dependent of a worker who was injured or killed in a compensable work-related accident during the course and scope of employment with a Colorado-based employer. It doesn’t matter which insurance company covered the workers’ comp claim. The Foundation evaluates the severity of the injury sustained by each student’s parent or guardian as well as the student’s academic achievement, financial need, civic involvement and strength of an essay. Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and be between the ages of 16 and 25 at the time of application.
